Earlier this week, we posted about the new construction at the VC Summer Nuclear Generating Station. The Vogtle Electric Generating Plant in Georgia also started new nuclear construction last year with an addition of two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors.

Votgle units 3 and 4 plan to start generating electricity in 2017 and 2018. This massive construction project is making history with the materials needed and the amount of people that will be employed. When finished, the four units at Vogtle will make the largest nuclear generating station in the United States. Watch the video below to learn more!
All of the new nuclear construction is happening in the Southeast, why do you think that is?

Several reasons for the Southeast focus of nuclear construction:

The southeast's population is growing faster than most other areas of the country.

The southeastern states are experienced with nuclear power, so the public is more comfortable with it.

Local electricity markets are regulated by public service commissions, not real-time commodity markets. This allows a longer-term focus on reliability and cost control instead of the lowest price at the moment.

Southern people might be more skeptical of media claims in general, and are definitely very skeptical of negative claims about nuclear power. They are more likely to focus on the long, positive track history of nuclear power instead of the hysterical media claim of the day.
